在《魔戒》中，矮人确实拥有灵魂。尽管奥力创造了矮人并未得到一如的许可，也无法赋予矮人灵魂和自由意识，一如很快就接受了这一行为，并表示“Thy offer I accepted even as it was made。”没有灵魂的造物行为上将与傀儡无异，但矮人已经能够用自己的语言和行动来表达情感，这也是一如赋予他们灵魂的证据。
阿尔达的造物没有谁高级谁低级之分，都是为了服务一如的设想而存在。他们将实现大乐章中未能完全展现的未来，并且将在世界终了时全然领悟“存在”的意义。正如《精灵宝钻》中所述：“Then the themes of Ilúvatar shall be played aright, and take Being in the moment of their utterance, for all shall then understand fully his intent in their part, and each shall know the comprehension of each。”
矮人和精灵、人类各有千秋。例如，丹恩率领的铁丘陵矮人精于矿业工程，他们的装备也以厚重见长。精灵与人类一方也有弓箭手和长兵，能够有效打击敌人。正如《霍比特人》第一章《乌云爆发》中所述：“There are many of our archers and spearmen now hidden in the rocks upon their right flank. Dwarf-mail may be good, but they will soon be hard put to it。”这不仅描述了战斗中的战术布局，也反映了不同种族间的相互制衡。
